Not Quite Autistic

He's neither here nor there, our son. Diagnosed with autism, but so very good at pretending to be neurotypical. It's a strange and difficult road to walk, and very few who understand.

He needs more discipline.
He needs to go to a private school.
He needs a smack on the backside.
He doesn't do that for me.
We never see that at school.
Oh, he's not autistic.
It could be worse.
Expect more from him.
Expect less from him.
He'll eat eventually.

I could go on, but quite frankly, it's depressing me. The point is, those are all things which have been said to me. The thing about raising a child who is unbelievably clever, but an emotional preschooler - you have to speak to both of them together. Every single moment for him is balanced on the high wire. We reach unimaginable highs, but when we hit the ground, it hurts.

I want to write about our experiences - not to shame my son, but to educate others about what it is to actually walk through life with such a magnificent child, and to offer my humble company to others.

In this space, we do LOVE. We meet our people where they are, and love them fiercely. We try a million different things, not to change who they are, but to help them thrive - just as they are.

I'd love you to come along, will you join me?

XO,
